Sport: noun - an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc. I often find myself arguing discussing with others whether certain “sports” should really be called sports. Per this definition, so many activities could be called “sports” but is it really appropriate? In my opinion, a sport is something that requires skill and is performed in a strenuous athletic manner. By those terms, things like golf, racing, fishing and even baseball would not quite qualify as they lack that strenuous, cardio element and reside almost exclusively on skill. There is also a strong argument that any “sport” in which a winner is decided by a judge, shouldn’t be a sport either. Take boxing for example. Sure one can win by knockout or submission, but in some cases, like the Cotto vs Clotty fight last night, a winner is decided by a panel of judges and sometimes the judges’ decision is split. Same thing would go for figure skating, synchronized swimming and gymnastics. Sure sports like football, hockey and basketball all have referees, but the argument there is that penalties or fouls given by the officials, more often than not, do not solely determine a winner, only penalize teams or players for improper actions. So what are we left with? Football, soccer, hockey, basketball, tennis, track and field, swimming, cycling and volleyball? I propose we revisit how we classify each of these activities and make new categories. Kind of like hardcore versus softcore pornography. Real sports like football and hockey would fall into the hardcore category, while baseball, golf and racing would fall into the softcore range. I also propose that any “sport” that a winner may be determined by the scores or decision of others be removed from the sport vertical completely as there are too many variables to make it a fair and equal playing field. Go ahead and call me crazy and feel free to explain why these opinions are wrong, but I am guessing I am not the only one who feels this way. Thus the movement begins now, I want to hear from you if you are on my side. Let’s go! 1. Do shit right the first time. Give me nothing to bitch about and I won’t bitch. (Ok, I will bitch less) PLAYOFFS!!! WooHoo!!! Yes, the NHL Playoffs are apon us, and it’s beautiful. Tonight is game one between my Red Wings and the Columbus Blue Jackets. Not going to speculate on anything, as I don’t want to jinx them, however I will say, after two periods, I like what I see. March Madness is here! WooHoo! Although I don’t usually take this much of an interest in it, this year covering it for Mahalo is making me really get into it. My Wolverines are kicking some butt. They upset Clemson in the first round, for their first NCAA Tourney win since 1998.
Yes, finally a post with actual words, thoughts, rather than the random links that the SEO bloggers love to see… Anyways, what’s new? I bought shelves, that was fun. It’s been raining a lot here, my lab decided he don’t shit in the rain anymore. Hmmm, what else. I been working hard, March Madness is coming up, that should be exciting. I don’t really have a lot to say at the moment, but wanted to check in and let you all know i am still breathing, although with some back and nerve issues walking is not so easy. Can’t say I really have anyone to cuss out right now. Economy still sucks, no football right now, someone hit my car and drove off, AGAIN. But overall things are well, and even the things that suck I am learning to just laugh at. Not the ha ha funny laugh, but the you’ve got to be fucking kidding me laugh. The one you give the bitches at the bar moments before you get into a drunken fist fight, get carried out, taken to another bar and pass out at some random person’s house, then wake up wanting to saw your own arm off, but quietly, not to wake up the ogre next to you–or so I have heard. I will leave you with that. Yes, I have been neglecting this blog and I apologize. I honestly have not been that terribly busy, just trying to get things done around the house. I do have a secret projekt in the works, which shall be officially unveiled soon. Stay tuned, this should be fun! Meh Yeah I know it’s been a while since my last post. Lots of madness here with cold weather, frozen pipes and puppies with allergies. Anyways, on the eve of one of the most historic days ever in the United States, I felt I needed to check in. In a matter of hours Barack Obama will be inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States. Beyond being the first African-American to take the top office, it marks a new era. In a matter of hours the direction of the country changes. We stop looking at the past failures, the busted economy and the disgusting war, and we start to look ahead. Barack brought a new way of thinking to so many, and I am not talking race. Just as Kennedy inspired Americans to look within, Barack brought hope, empowerment and enlightenment to millions. Today, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, he urged citizens to volunteer in their communities, just as he and his family were doing in their new home of Washington, DC. A record number of people volunteered in Philadelphia, although I am sure that was not the only city to set records. During the long campaign, Barack’s grassroots network was both unprecedented and undoubtly effective. Volunteers and voters turned out in amazingly high numbers, from the senior citizen working an hour calling others to the hardcore people that came from across the globe to help for months at a time. I was fortunate enough to be a part of the campaign. Yes, I am using the word fortunate, when months back I was bitching about the long hours and stress. I would do it again in a minute. As shitty as the economy is, added to other personal battles with a work authority figure and my old crumbling house, the feelings of accomplishment, unity and hope top all of that. I mentioned to a friend that I am not sure this experience as a whole can be topped. He replied that surely there will be other gigantic movements in the country soon. As much as I am going to savor this moment and the historic nature of something I helped to create, I agree with him. President Obama (yes I get chills writing that) has laid the groundwork for common people like myself to accomplish anything. He set the bar higher for all of us and with that kind of motovation and inspiration, nothing is impossible. More tomorrow, heading to bed to wake up at the ass crack of dawn again to watch the festivities. Keep the tissues handy. OMG the Winter Classic was AMAZING. Yes, it was cold, and there were a ton of hating B-Hawks fans heckling me, and beer was $7, but it was such a good time and the Wings won and I met some cool people. I have been inside, out of the cold for a few hours now, but I am still freezing. But overall, that was a once in a lifetime experience and I am soooo happy i came here. Lots of important people there. We were right under the concourse for the executive suites. The oh so yummy Vince Vaughn came by twice, a Chicago native who was cheered, and NHL commish Gary Bettman scooted passed, to the boos and name-calling of the fans. Random game notes:
Although it’s only like 8 p.m. here, I am exhausted. Yes I have been up since before the ass crack of dawn, but I will do my best to stay up a few more hours, so I can play in Chicago tomorrow. I don’t have a whole bunch planned, maybe go up in the Sears Tower, but that’s about it as far as touristy stuff. Might just spend my afternoon watching football and drinking beer, maybe at the ESPN Zone bar. Yes it’s the same shit I do all the time, but its not the same old city, the same old bars and the same old people. As much as I want to go to Chicago for the Winter Classic, I think I will stay home. Prices for tickets and hotels are going up and although I could afford it, I think I will put that cash away for a proper vacation. I have compromised (yes with myself) and decided I will drop a bill or two on a new tattoo. I have wanted a Gothic D, for Detroit, my home and love, and for the Red Wings, for a looooong time. I have been looking for a long time for the right D, as it will be with me forever, and I think I found it. It’s the D featured on the throwback sweaters that the Wings will wear at the Winter Classic, so it combines Detroit, the Wings and the game I passed up all together. I am thinking black, with possibly some red shading, however I am not sure if the red will make it look hokey. And yes, just like when I got my first tatt, I will probably pass out. LOL 10/26/2008 UPDATE: Yeah so I thought I had my mind made up not to go. Then I thought about it more. I realized that I don’t need to fly there. Heck, I would drive an hour to DTW anyways, just to wait three hours for an hour-long flight. In less than that time and for like $100 less, I can drive. It’s only four hours. I also realized that I don’t need to stay in a nice spot on the water or downtown. I am not going there for the hotels, I am going to see the Winter Classic. So I did some more checking, found a reasonable hotel near O’Hare and a decent ticket in the 200s section and clicked the magic button to buy! Yes, going to the M-Fing Winter Classic. Total cost, about $600-700, depending on how many of those oh so lovely $8 beers I decide to have at the game. WOO! |
